Research in particle physics, while focused on complex scientific questions, generates knowledge and develops technology with potential for application in various business sectors. The LIPTec operation, co-financed by COMPETE 2030, seeks to capitalize on this potential by strengthening the link between the laboratory and the business community.
According to Raul Sarmento, coordinator of LIPTec, research at LIP covers areas such as artificial intelligence, detection and monitoring systems, radiation engineering, and multimedia tools. These skills, developed to address scientific challenges, can find practical applications in various industries.
The LIP identifies five areas with transfer potential: data science and artificial intelligence; monitoring and control systems; detection instrumentation and electronics; radiation engineering and simulation; and advanced dissemination tools. Applications include image analysis for identifying industrial defects, monitoring systems for resource management and environmental tracking, and high-precision instrumentation for health and industrial safety.
The LIPTec operation aims to create conditions to develop the potential of technologies still in the laboratory validation phase, bringing them closer to economically viable applications. Through a Technology Transfer Office, it will act as a contact point between the laboratory and companies, organizing and expanding collaboration efforts.
With hubs in Braga and Coimbra, LIPTec seeks to enhance the economic valorization of scientific knowledge by mapping competencies, producing dissemination materials, organizing events, and supporting joint projects. The goal is to increase the number of technology transfer agreements and funding applications with companies.
