The Government has launched two electronic auctions to allocate national electricity grid connection capacity, aiming to boost renewable energy production and electricity storage.

The competitive tenders aim to allocate national electricity grid connection capacity and mobilize investments in renewable energy and autonomous storage facilities. These are the first competitive procedures of their kind since 2021.
According to the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, these auctions "give a new impetus to storage in Portugal and to an energy transition that combines more affordable electricity with the valorization of communities and land use".
The allocation of this grid connection capacity allows for the advancement of new renewable energy production and electricity storage projects. Storage enables electricity produced during periods of high renewable availability to be saved and used later when consumption increases. This solution helps integrate more renewable energy into the electrical system, reduce reliance on natural gas power plants, and lessen pressure on electricity prices.
Municipalities will receive 70% of the auction revenues for new renewable energy projects with associated batteries and 30% of the revenues for autonomous electricity storage systems, in addition to annual compensation paid by the project-responsible companies.
