The Polytechnic University of Setúbal (UNIPS) is joining the GeSI – DEFIA Portugal Network, a new national network focused on Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education.

The network, led by the University of Coimbra (UC), brings together 62 national institutions and aims to promote the responsible adoption of AI in Higher Education, as well as capacity building and AI literacy for students, faculty, and researchers.
The initiative seeks to transform the debate on AI and Education into concrete actions, fostering innovation in teaching and learning practices, aligning digital transformation with sustainability, and strengthening cooperation between academia, the public sector, businesses, and civil society.
Part of the Digital Education for Impact Alliance (DEFIA), the network was formally launched in Coimbra on October 15th, during the international conference “Appropriate Guardrails for AGI: the Crucial Role of Universities”. UNIPS was represented by Martinha Piteira, an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department at the School of Technology of Setúbal (ESTSetúbal/UNIPS).
During the meeting, the “Portuguese National Statement” was presented, a document reflecting the participating institutions' joint commitment to the development, governance, and use of digital technologies and AI in respect of human dignity, democratic values, sustainability, and the common good.
This commitment is also reflected in UNIPS's work, which at the beginning of the academic year approved the Guidelines for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Processes, a document resulting from a participatory process.
