The European Investment Bank (EIB) celebrated its 50th anniversary of activity in Portugal on October 27th. The event, held in the Noble Hall of the Ministry of Finance, brought together representatives from the EIB, the Portuguese Republic, and distinguished partners.
Since 1976, the EIB has been a crucial financier of projects in Portugal, with a total of approximately 70 billion euros across 1,000 operations. Its investments have covered vital areas such as transport, energy, water and sanitation, health, education, housing, business innovation, and credit lines for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Over these five decades, EIB financing has decisively complemented European funds, supporting structural investments essential for the country's modernization and European integration.
The ceremony included a reflection on the journey undertaken and a sharing of visions for the future. New loans to the Republic were also announced, totaling 750 million euros for the recovery from damages caused by extreme climate events last winter, and 300 million euros for the co-financing of projects with European funds, under the IFRRU 2030 framework.
The event featured interventions from the President of the Republic, António José Seguro; the President of the European Investment Bank, Nadia Calviño; the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas; the former President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso; the Secretary of State Adjunct and Budget, José Maria Brandão de Brito; and the former European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira.
